What counts as architectural lighting?

Lighting chosen as part of the architecture, not added after it: statement pendants over dining tables and stairwells, track and spot systems for art, concealed LED strip in ceiling rebates and joinery, wall washers, and sculptural pieces from European houses — the Flos, Louis Poulsen and Artemide school of fitting that Auckland's design showrooms carry. These are precision products: exact drop heights, specific drivers, dimming systems that must match, and in many cases real weight hanging from the ceiling.

Why designer fittings need a careful electrician

  • Weight and fixing — a large pendant can't hang off a standard ceiling box. We fix to structure, add blocking in the ceiling where needed, and confirm the load path before anything leaves the box.

  • Dimming compatibility — premium LED fittings are fussy about dimmers. The wrong pairing flickers, buzzes or dies early. We match driver and dimmer (trailing edge, DALI or 0–10V on larger schemes) before install day.

  • Drivers and transformers — many architectural fittings need remote drivers housed accessibly, not buried in the ceiling. Future servicing depends on where we put them today.

  • Height and position — the difference between a pendant that owns the room and one that's in the way is 100mm. We hang, stand back, adjust, then lock off.

  • Warranty and certification — correct installation protects the fitting's warranty, and the electrical work carries a Certificate of Compliance like any other.

Frequently asked questions

Can you install a fitting I bought overseas?

Usually — if it can be made compliant for NZ supply (voltage, wiring standard, safe construction). We check before quoting; occasionally an imported fitting needs a replacement driver, and rarely one simply can't be legally installed. Better to know before you ship it.

My new pendant flickers when dimmed. Fixable?

Almost always — it's a driver-dimmer mismatch. Swapping to a compatible dimmer, or setting the correct dimming mode, cures most flicker in one visit.

How high should a pendant hang over a dining table?

The common starting point is 750–900mm above the table top, adjusted for the fitting's size and the room's ceiling height — and then by eye, with you standing there. We never lock off without the owner looking at it first.

Can heavy fittings go on any ceiling?

Weight needs structure. Where the joists don't cooperate, we add blocking from the roof space or coordinate with your builder — sorted at quote stage, not discovered on install day.

Do you do whole-home lighting design?

We do practical lighting design — layers, zones, dimming, placement — and install to a lighting designer's or architect's specification when one is engaged. Either way, one contractor delivers the whole scheme.

Is the installation certified?

Yes — hardwired lighting installation is prescribed electrical work: licensed electrician, tested, Certificate of Compliance issued.
