Commercial Electrical Work Before Christmas or in January? The Real Auckland Timeline for Fitouts, Switchboards and Relights

There are two real windows for commercial electrical work in Auckland right now, not one, and they need different decisions this month. A fitout or a switchboard job you want trading-ready before Christmas needs to be locked in by late October. A shutdown-week job — board replacement, a warehouse relight, a maintenance backlog — needs booking by late November, because most sites close around 21–22 December for the break. A January start is the third option, and for that one the ordering deadline for long-lead switchgear and metering applications is also late October.

Know which window you're in? Call 021 889 770 — tell us the target date and we'll tell you honestly whether it's achievable.

The three windows

  • Trading-ready before Christmas: a smaller retail or office fitout, done properly, is realistically 4–6 weeks from decision to trading. Decide by late October and it's achievable; decide in November and you're racing the calendar.

  • The shutdown week itself: the one period of the year most commercial sites can accept a planned outage without disrupting trade. This is the natural window for a switchboard replacement, a warehouse or workshop relight, or clearing a maintenance backlog. Book by late November — sites close around 21–22 December and the good slots go first.

  • A January start: often the smarter call for a larger hospitality, retail or multi-floor office fitout, since the post-Christmas trading lull is a genuinely better window than squeezing a big job into December. The catch is that long-lead items — switchgear, distribution boards, metering applications with the lines company — need to be locked in by late October regardless of when the physical work happens.

Why late October is the real deadline, whichever window you're in

Distribution boards, switchgear and some lighting are ordered items with lead times, not off-the-shelf stock — the physical job can only start once they're on site. Metering and connection applications with the lines company run on their own timeline too. Both of those clocks start ticking the moment you commit, which is why the decision, not the installation date, is the thing that actually needs to happen by late October.

What to bundle into a shutdown-week visit

If you're accepting a planned outage anyway, it's the efficient time to bundle several things into one visit rather than four separate callouts across the year: switchboard inspection and any overdue upgrade, test and tag, emergency and exit lighting testing, and any lighting or power additions that have been on the list. See our commercial electrical maintenance guide for what a full scheduled visit covers.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to book before Christmas?

For a smaller job, not yet — call us with your target date and scope and we'll tell you honestly whether it fits. For anything involving ordered switchgear, the window is closing fast.

Can you work during our shutdown week?

Yes — that's exactly the window this is built for. Book it now rather than in December; the slots either side of Christmas fill first.

What should I lock in now if I'm planning a January fitout?

The scope and the long-lead items — distribution board, switchgear, metering application — by late October, even if the physical work doesn't start until January. See our full commercial fitout cost guide.
