Electrician on Auckland's North Shore: A Guide to the Shore's Homes and Suburbs

  • 2 min read

The North Shore packs a century of Auckland housing into one stretch of coast: 1900s Devonport villas, 1950s–70s family homes through Glenfield and Beach Haven, beachfront renovations along the East Coast Bays, and thousands of new townhouses around Albany. Each generation wires differently — and fails differently. ECD services the Shore from our Remuera base, fifteen minutes over the bridge, with the same rates as the rest of Auckland. Here is what Shore owners should know about their homes.

On the Shore and need a straight answer? Call 021 889 770 — no extra travel charge for crossing the bridge.

The Shore's four electrical generations

  • Heritage Devonport and Northcote Point (1890s–1930s) — villas with original or partially replaced wiring, heritage constraints, and renovation budgets to match. Rewiring and sympathetic upgrades territory.

  • The family-home belt (1950s–70s) — Glenfield, Birkdale, Beach Haven, Forrest Hill, Sunnynook. Solid weatherboard and brick homes on ageing switchboards; the Shore's biggest concentration of ceramic-fuse boards.

  • The coastal strip — Takapuna, Milford, Castor Bay through Browns Bay. Premium renovations plus salt air that eats outdoor fittings; exterior electrical needs marine-grade thinking.

  • The growth corridor — Albany, Rosedale, Long Bay. New builds and townhouses with modern wiring but developer-minimum provisioning: not enough points, no EV cable, builder-grade lighting.

What Shore jobs cost in 2026

Same as the rest of Auckland: $90–$150 per hour plus GST, switchboard upgrades $1,500–$4,000, EV chargers $1,500–$3,500 installed, whole-house LED swaps $1,800–$4,000, full villa rewires $10,000–$25,000+. We quote fixed prices from photos and plans wherever the job allows — full breakdowns in our Auckland electrician cost guide.

Commercial Shore: Wairau Valley to Albany

The Shore also works for a living — the Wairau Valley and Rosedale industrial belts, Takapuna's office towers, Albany's retail sprawl. Fitouts, maintenance schedules, test and tag and BWOF emergency lighting all run on the same after-hours-friendly basis as our central Auckland commercial work.

Frequently asked questions

Do you charge extra to come to the Shore?

No — standard Auckland rates. Off-peak the bridge is fifteen minutes from our Remuera base; we schedule Shore jobs to avoid the peak crawl, which is better for your bill too.

Which Shore suburbs do you cover?

All of them — Devonport to Long Bay, Beach Haven to Browns Bay. Same-week scheduling for planned work; faults triaged like anywhere else in Auckland.

Can one visit cover several small jobs?

Please do — batching points, lights, alarms and small fixes into one Shore visit is the cheapest way to use us, one callout instead of three.
