EV Charger Installation in Remuera, Epsom, Parnell and the Eastern Bays: Cost, Switchboard Checks and What Older Homes Need

A standard home EV charger install — a dedicated 7kW circuit from the switchboard to the garage or driveway — typically runs $1,725–$2,875 including GST ($1,500–$2,500 + GST) where the board already has room. In Remuera, Epsom, Parnell and the Eastern Bays, where a lot of the housing stock is villas, 1920s–40s character homes and older bungalows, the board often doesn't — which turns a straightforward install into a switchboard job too. Knowing which one you're getting before the quote arrives saves a surprise.

Why the villa belt is different

Remuera, Epsom, Parnell, Meadowbank, Ōrakei/Mission Bay and St Heliers carry a high concentration of pre-1950s villas and character homes, plus a good number of 1950s–70s rebuilds. Original boards in these homes were sized for an era with no dishwasher, no heat pump and certainly no car charging overnight. Two things decide your job: whether the board has a spare way and enough capacity headroom for a continuous 32A load, and whether the run from the board to the charging point is straightforward or has to navigate a villa's solid walls, verandas and older subfloor access.

The two scenarios

  • Board has room: a dedicated circuit, a compliant isolator, load management if you'll run other big loads at the same time, testing and a Certificate of Compliance. Half a day to a day.

  • Board is full or old: a switchboard upgrade first — typically $1,725–$4,600 including GST — then the EV circuit. Combining both in one visit is more efficient than two separate callouts.

Load management: the cheaper alternative to a bigger supply

If your supply is genuinely tight — an older single-phase connection with little headroom — a load-managed or dynamic-load charger can share available capacity with the rest of the house instead of requiring a full supply upgrade. It's worth pricing against a Vector mains upgrade before assuming you need one; see our guide on Vector mains upgrades for when that's actually necessary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install an EV charger myself?

No — a hard-wired EV charger is prescribed electrical work and must be installed by a licensed electrical worker and certified. Full detail in our who can legally install an EV charger guide.

Do villas need special treatment for the cable run?

Often yes — solid walls and limited subfloor access can mean the run costs more than in a newer home with easy roof or wall cavities. We assess this on-site rather than quoting blind.

Will I definitely need a switchboard upgrade?

Not always — a good number of these homes have already had a board upgrade at some point. We check capacity on the same visit as the EV quote, so you get one number, not a guess followed by a second quote.
