Garage and Workshop Power in Auckland: Turning the Garage Into a Real Workspace

The Auckland garage has become gym, workshop, office and EV bay — usually running on one socket and a bare bulb from 1975. A proper garage power upgrade — more sockets, decent LED lighting, a dedicated tool circuit — typically runs $800–$2,500 plus GST attached to the house, more for a detached shed needing its own underground feed and sub-board. Here is what to plan.

The workshop-grade setup

  • Sockets at bench height, every couple of metres — doubles minimum, a four-gang over the main bench. Extension leads draped across a workshop are how accidents happen.

  • A dedicated circuit for heavy tools — saws, compressors and welders on their own breaker stop the house lights dipping every cut.

  • LED batten lighting — bright, even, cheap to run; two or three battens transform a single-bulb garage.

  • EV provision — the garage is where the charger lands; run the cable while other work happens. See the EV charger guide

  • RCD protection throughout — non-negotiable where power tools and concrete floors meet.

Detached sheds and sleepouts

A detached building needs its own properly buried feed from the house board and usually a small sub-board of its own — trenching is the cost driver, so lay the cable while any landscaping is open. The extension-lead-out-the-window arrangement fails every safety test and most insurance ones; a permanent feed with a Certificate of Compliance is the version that holds up.

Frequently asked questions

Can my old board take a garage circuit?

Depends on spare ways and condition — a photo tells us. Full boards or ceramic fuses turn the garage job into the board job first.

What about a welder or compressor?

Tell us the model — some run on a beefy single-phase circuit, big ones raise the three-phase question. Sizing to the actual machine beats guessing.

Garage-to-office conversion — same job?

Same bones plus heating, data and better lighting temperature. If it's becoming a habitable room, consent questions belong to your builder; the wiring is straightforward either way.
