Heat Pump Electrical Requirements in Auckland: Circuits, Costs and Placement

  • 2 min read

Most heat pumps in Auckland homes need their own dedicated circuit from the switchboard — the electrical side typically costs $400–$900 plus GST on top of the heat pump installation, more if the switchboard needs work first. Sorting the circuit before the heat pump installer arrives avoids the classic delay: a unit on the wall with nothing safe to plug it into.

Why heat pumps need a dedicated circuit

A heat pump draws sustained current every time it runs — sharing a circuit with the kitchen or laundry invites nuisance tripping and overloaded wiring. A properly sized dedicated circuit with its own breaker, and an isolating switch beside the outdoor unit, is the standard installation. Larger or multi-room (ducted) systems draw more again and occasionally justify a switchboard upgrade or, in rare residential cases, a three-phase conversation.

What the electrical work costs

  • Dedicated circuit and isolator for a single high-wall unit: $400–$900 + GST

  • Long cable runs or difficult access: toward the top of that range and beyond

  • Ducted systems: quoted per design — bigger breakers, sometimes multiple circuits

  • Old switchboard with no spare ways: upgrade first, $1,500–$4,000 — see our switchboard guide

Rentals: heat pumps and Healthy Homes

The Healthy Homes heating standard is what puts heat pumps into most Auckland rentals — and the circuit is part of compliance done properly. Landlords: one visit can do the circuit, check the board, and leave you a Certificate of Compliance for the file.

Frequently asked questions

Can the heat pump installer do the wiring?

Only if they hold the electrical licence — many HVAC installers subcontract the circuit. Booking your own electrician often costs less and means the board gets looked at properly, not just fed another breaker.

Does a heat pump circuit need RCD protection?

New circuits are installed with RCD protection under current rules — another reason old boards without RCDs end up upgraded at heat pump time.

Is a heat pump cheap to run?

Per unit of heat, it's the cheapest electric heating in most NZ homes — which is why the modest circuit cost pays back quickly against plug-in heaters.
