Retail lighting gets all the attention, and rightly — it sells product. But the rest of a retail fitout decides whether the shop actually functions day to day: whether staff can take payment, whether the window display can change without an electrician, whether the security system works, and whether the sign out front is still lit in two years. The counter and till points

POS terminal, EFTPOS, receipt printer, barcode scanner, cash drawer, a phone charger and often a second terminal at peak. That's a lot of outlets in one metre of joinery, and they need to be positioned before the counter is built — retrofitting power into finished cabinetry is the single most common avoidable cost in a retail fitout. Keep payment equipment on a clean circuit so a tripping appliance elsewhere in the shop never stops you taking money.

What else a retail fitout needs

  • Window display power on its own switched circuit — so displays can change seasonally without calling anyone

  • Track lighting on the shopfloor — the most flexible option when stock and layout move constantly

  • Illuminated signage and shopfront lighting, with a timer or photocell so it runs on the hours you want

  • Power and cabling for CCTV, alarm, and any electronic article surveillance at the door

  • Fitting room lighting that flatters rather than interrogates — colour temperature and placement genuinely affect conversion

  • Back of house: stockroom lighting and power, staff kitchen, and the comms cabinet

  • Emergency and exit lighting reflecting the final layout, including any changes to the exit path

Illuminated signage

Your sign is a permanently installed outdoor electrical item, exposed to Auckland weather, that a customer sees before they see anything else in the shop. It needs a properly rated weatherproof supply, sensible control so it isn't lit at 3am unless you want it to be, and safe access for servicing. Signage is usually made by a sign company and connected by an electrician — agree who is doing which part early, because it's a classic gap where each assumes the other has it. Council and landlord rules on signage vary by location, so confirm what's permitted before it's manufactured.

Should I use track lighting or fixed downlights?

Often partially. We'll inspect what's there, tell you what's safe and worth keeping, and what should be replaced — which usually saves more than starting from scratch.
