Smart Home Wiring in Auckland: What's Worth Automating (and What Isn't)

The smart home upgrades that earn their keep in Auckland homes are unglamorous: smart switches on lighting zones, scheduled hot water and heating, sensor lighting at entries, and a hardwired network backbone so it all works when the Wi-Fi doesn't. Budget from a few hundred dollars for a smart-switch starter to $3,000–$8,000+ for a whole-home setup. Here is what to automate, and what to skip.

Worth doing

  • Smart switches over smart bulbs — wired smart switches keep the wall switch working like a switch. Smart bulbs die the moment someone flicks the wall off. Switches need a neutral at the switch: standard in newer homes, part of the quote in older ones.

  • Scheduled hot water and heat pump control — the automations that pay for themselves on the power bill.

  • Sensor and scene lighting — entries and hallways on sensors; one 'goodnight' scene beats fifteen apps.

  • Hardwired data backbone — ethernet to TVs, office and Wi-Fi access points. The most future-proof cable in the house.

Worth skipping

Smart gadgets stacked on old wiring — fix the bones first. Voice-everything for a household that just wants the lights to work. Proprietary systems that lock you to one installer forever: we favour open standards so you're never hostage to an app that stops being supported.

Frequently asked questions

Does smart switching need an electrician?

Yes — replacing wall switches is mains wiring work for a licensed electrician. Plug-in smart plugs you can do yourself; anything behind a faceplate is ours.

Can a character villa be made smart?

Yes — and it's often the perfect compromise: the switches can look period-correct while dimming smartly behind the wall. Neutral runs and box depth are checked at quote stage in older homes.

What happens when the internet goes down?

Done properly, everything still works as ordinary switches and schedules running locally — only remote app control drops. If a system can't pass that test, we don't install it.
