West Auckland loses power more often, and gets it back later, than most of the city. The reason is geography: overhead lines running through heavily treed terrain from Titirangi to Swanson, with fewer alternative feeds than the isthmus. When a storm brings branches down, restoration takes crews longer to reach and longer to fix. That's the network's job — but what happens inside your house when the lights go out is entirely yours, and there's a lot you can do about it.

First: is it the network or your house?
Sixty-second diagnosis. Look outside — if the street lights and neighbours are dark too, it's a network outage: report it and check Vector's outage map. If only your property is out, or only part of it, the problem is inside your installation. Check the switchboard with dry hands for a tripped main switch or RCD and reset once. If it trips straight back with everything unplugged, that's a fixed-wiring fault — leave it off and call.
