It's almost never a faulty machine. It's an equipment list that outgrew the circuits it was put on.

The espresso machine is the whole question

Commercial espresso machines vary enormously. A compact two-group machine may run happily on a dedicated single-phase circuit. A busy three-group machine, or one with high-output steam boilers, often needs considerably more — and many are supplied three-phase, or can be configured either way depending on what's available. The right answer is never a rule of thumb; it's the machine's data plate and the supplier's installation requirements. Get those to your electrician before the machine is ordered, because the difference between the two scenarios is a dedicated circuit versus a supply conversation with the lines company.

What gets its own circuit in a cafe

  • Espresso machine — always dedicated, sized to the data plate, never shared

  • Grinders — low draw individually, but they run simultaneously with everything else at peak

  • Refrigeration — underbench fridges, display cabinet, freezer and milk fridge, kept off the same circuit as heating appliances

  • Heating appliances — toastie press, panini grill, oven, urn: individually modest, collectively the thing that trips you

  • Dishwasher or glasswasher — dedicated, and often needing hot water supply coordination

  • POS, EFTPOS and Wi-Fi — on a clean circuit, so a tripping appliance doesn't take your ability to take payment with it

The counter layout matters more than people expect

Outlets need to land where the equipment actually sits, at the right height, accessible enough to isolate but not somewhere a barista will knock a plug with their hip forty times a day. Once the joinery is installed, moving an outlet means pulling apart cabinetry. Walk the counter layout with your electrician while it's still a drawing — it takes twenty minutes and saves a fortune.

Frequently asked questions

My cafe trips every morning. Is my machine faulty?

Usually not. If it trips at the same time each day it's almost certainly overload from simultaneous use, not a fault. If it trips randomly and the RCD is involved, that's more likely a genuine fault — either way, testing tells us in one visit.

Can I upgrade to a bigger coffee machine in my existing shop?

Often yes, but check first. It depends on your existing supply, board capacity and whether three-phase is available. A ten-minute check before you buy beats discovering it after delivery.

Does my cafe equipment need test and tag?

For a straightforward tenancy, typically several days of electrical work split across rough-in and fit-off, sequenced around joinery and equipment delivery. A supply upgrade adds weeks, which is why it's the first thing to check.
