Salt Air and Electrics: Why Outdoor Fittings Fail on Auckland's East Coast Bays

If you live between Takapuna and Long Bay and your outdoor lights, garden power or gate motor keep failing, the cause is almost always the same: salt air. Airborne chloride corrodes terminals, seizes cable glands and destroys seals on fittings that were never rated for a coastal environment — often within two or three years. The fix isn't replacing the same gear again; it's specifying for the street you actually live on. Here is what that means and what it costs.

What salt air actually does
Chloride-laden air settles on every exposed surface within a few hundred metres of the coast, and prevailing easterlies push it further inland on the Bays than most people expect. On electrical gear it does three things: it corrodes brass and steel terminals until connections run hot and fail; it attacks the alloy bodies of cheap light fittings until covers seize or crumble; and it degrades rubber gaskets so water gets into places it was never meant to be. What to specify on the Bays
Marine-grade 316 stainless fittings, not 304 — the difference is exactly the chloride resistance you need, and it shows up after year three
Quality composite or powder-coated marine-rated housings where stainless isn't practical
Higher IP ratings than the minimum — IP65 and above for anything exposed, with glands done properly rather than just tightened
Sheltered mounting positions wherever the design allows — under eaves beats fully exposed, every time
RCD protection on all outdoor circuits, and a periodic check as part of maintenance rather than after a failure
The cost maths
Marine-grade fittings typically cost 40–100% more than the budget equivalent. That sounds like a lot until you price the alternative: replacing cheap fittings every two to three years, each time paying the callout as well as the hardware. A garden lighting scheme that costs $3,000 done properly and lasts fifteen years is cheaper than $1,800 done twice in six. How far inland does salt air matter?
Further than most people assume — exposure depends on distance, prevailing wind and whether anything shelters your site. Homes several streets back from Browns Bay or Milford beach still show classic coastal corrosion. If your fittings are failing early, treat the site as coastal regardless of what the map suggests.
Can existing fittings be protected rather than replaced?
Sometimes — cleaning terminals, replacing glands and seals, and applying appropriate protection buys time on gear that's otherwise sound. Once corrosion reaches the terminals or the housing itself, replacement is the honest answer.
Does the switchboard need coastal treatment too?
If it's in an exposed garage, carport or external cupboard on the Bays — yes, and it's worth inspecting for corrosion at the same time as the outdoor gear. Boards in sheltered internal positions are generally fine.
