The Shore-to-city commute is exactly the driving pattern that makes an EV work: predictable daily distance, a garage to park in overnight, and a return trip short enough that you never think about range. Installing a home charger on the North Shore typically costs $1,500–$3,500 plus GST on top of the charger — but the number that decides your quote is the age of your switchboard, not the distance to your garage.

The Shore's split: old boards, new cars

A 7.4kW charger draws 32 amps continuously — more than anything else in a typical house, and it draws it for hours. On a modern Albany or Long Bay townhouse board that's usually straightforward. On a 1960s Glenfield, Birkdale or Forrest Hill board with ceramic fuses and no spare ways, it isn't: the honest answer is a switchboard upgrade first, then the charger. Done together it's one visit, one set of testing and one certificate, which is cheaper than discovering the problem on install day.

  • Wall box charger (7.4kW single phase): roughly $800–$2,500 for the unit

  • Installation on a dedicated circuit: $1,500–$3,500 + GST

  • Switchboard upgrade first, where needed: $1,500–$4,000

  • Long driveway runs with trenching — common on larger Bays and Torbay sections — add to the install cost

Overnight charging and the power bill

Most NZ retailers now offer EV-friendly plans with cheap overnight windows. A smart charger scheduled into those hours is where the running-cost advantage actually lives — charging at peak rates throws away much of the benefit. We set the schedule up at commissioning; most people never touch it again. Same logic applies to hot water timers, which is why the two jobs often get done together.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just use the portable charger on a normal socket?

For a plug-in hybrid or a short commute, sometimes. For a daily Shore-to-city run, a 3-pin socket is slow and — on an older garage circuit — a genuine fire risk under sustained load. A dedicated circuit is the safe version.

We're in a terraced development with shared parking — options?

Load-managed shared setups exist and work well, but they need the body corporate involved and the supply assessed properly. Worth solving collectively rather than three owners each doing their own thing.

Do I need three phase for faster charging?

Almost never at home. A 7.4kW single-phase charger fully recharges most EVs overnight — 22kW three-phase is a commercial or fleet answer, not a commuter one.
