Glenfield, Birkdale, Beach Haven, Forrest Hill and Sunnynook were built out between the 1950s and 1970s, and thousands of those homes still run on their original switchboards. A board designed for a stove, a fridge and a radio now carries a heat pump, an induction cooktop, a dishwasher, a home office and increasingly a 7kW EV charger. That's why the breakers trip. Why this part of the Shore in particular

The post-war Shore suburbs were built fast, to a consistent standard, in a tight window — which means they're all reaching the same electrical milestone at once. Unlike central Auckland's villas, these homes generally have sound structure and accessible roof space; the wiring often isn't the problem. The board is. Power off for a few hours. Frequently asked questions

Does an old board mean the whole house needs rewiring?

Usually not on this vintage. Post-war Shore homes commonly have serviceable cable with an obsolete board — the upgrade solves it. An inspection confirms which situation you're in before you spend anything.

Will my insurer care?

Increasingly they ask about rewirable fuses and wiring age at quote or renewal. A modern board with its CoC answers the question permanently — check your own policy wording, since every insurer treats it differently.

Can the EV charger and board be done together?
