Why Do My Lights Flicker? An Auckland Homeowner's Diagnostic Guide

The pattern tells the story: one flickering bulb is the bulb; one room is that circuit or its dimmer; the whole house — especially if it dims when big appliances start — points at the switchboard, a loose main connection or the street supply, and deserves an electrician promptly. Here is the diagnostic ladder we use, and which rungs are safe to climb yourself.

The diagnostic ladder

  • One bulb — swap it. If the new one flickers too, the fitting or its connection is the suspect: electrician territory.

  • LEDs flickering on a dimmer — classic driver-dimmer mismatch. An LED-compatible dimmer or correct dimming mode cures it; our downlight guide covers it.

  • One room or circuit — a loose connection somewhere on that circuit: a worn switch, a tired junction, a backstabbed socket. Book it — loose connections generate heat.

  • Whole house, appliance-linked — heavy loads on an overloaded board, or a deteriorating main connection. Prompt professional job.

  • Whole house, random, neighbours too — network side: report to your lines company (Vector for most of central Auckland).

When flicker is a warning, not an annoyance

Flicker plus any of these means stop tolerating and start dialling: buzzing or crackling from switches, warm switch plates, a fishy or burning smell, breakers tripping, or flicker that began after major weather or renovation work. A failing neutral connection — the nastiest cause — can put damaging voltage swings through every appliance in the house before it fails completely. In the central ring's older homes, decades-old main connections are a known culprit; the fix is quick once diagnosed.

Frequently asked questions

My lights dim when the heat pump or dryer starts — normal?

A barely-visible blink on startup can be normal; obvious dimming isn't — it suggests undersized or deteriorating supply to those circuits. Worth an inspection before it escalates.

Cheap LED bulbs flicker slightly all the time — faulty house?

Often just cheap bulbs — poor drivers shimmer, especially dimmed. Swap one for a quality brand and compare before blaming the wiring.

What does fixing a flicker fault cost?

Most single-circuit causes are found and fixed inside the first hour or two at standard rates — $90–$150/hr plus callout. Board-level causes get a fixed quote after diagnosis.
