High Power Bill in Auckland? 10 Things to Check Before You Call Your Retailer

When an Auckland power bill jumps by 30% or more with no change in habits, there's almost always a physical cause — and in our experience the hot water cylinder is the single most common one, followed by a faulty appliance drawing current continuously. Your retailer can tell you how much you used; they can't tell you what used it. These ten checks find the cause, and most of them take a few minutes.

The ten checks, in the order worth doing them
Is your hot water cylinder overflow pipe dripping or running? This is the number one cause of a mystery bill spike. A failed thermostat or element can have the cylinder heating continuously and dumping hot water out the overflow — you're paying to heat water that goes straight down the drain. See hot water cylinder overflow for what to look for.
Compare the bill to the same month last year, not last month. Auckland power use is seasonal — a winter bill against a summer bill tells you nothing useful.
Check whether it's an estimated read rather than an actual one. Estimates get squared up later and can produce an alarming catch-up bill that isn't a fault at all.
Check your plan and rates haven't changed. A tariff change, the end of a fixed term or a lost prompt-payment discount can move a bill without your usage moving at all.
Look at your overnight usage in your retailer's app or portal. If you have a smart meter, overnight consumption when everyone is asleep is the clearest signal of something running continuously that shouldn't be.
Check for a second fridge or freezer in the garage. An old chest freezer well past its best can quietly use several times what a modern one does, and it's the appliance people forget they own.
Consider what's new since the bill changed — a heat pump, a spa, an EV, a new tenant or flatmate, someone now working from home. Each is a real and legitimate increase, not a fault.
Check underfloor heating and heated towel rails. Both are commonly left running 24/7 on a circuit nobody thinks about, and a towel rail left on all year is a genuine line item.
Check for a pool or spa pump running longer than it needs to, or a pump that's failing and drawing more current than it should.
Read your own meter a week apart, same time of day. That gives you a real daily usage figure to compare against the bill — and it's the single most useful piece of evidence if you do end up disputing it. See how to read your meter.
What's actually worth calling an electrician for
If your overnight usage is high with everything switched off, if the hot water overflow is running, or if a specific circuit seems to be the culprit and you can't identify what's on it, that's a fault-finding job rather than a billing question. We can meter individual circuits to isolate what's drawing power, test the hot water element and thermostat, and check for insulation faults — which can leak current to earth continuously and cost you money while being invisible until something trips. Most of these are found in a single visit.
Frequently asked questions
Can a faulty meter cause a high bill?
It's possible but uncommon, and the meter isn't yours or your electrician's to test or replace — that sits with your retailer and their metering provider. If you genuinely suspect the meter, request a meter accuracy check through your retailer. Do the other nine checks first; in most cases the cause is an appliance.
Can an electrical fault increase my power bill?
Yes. A failed hot water thermostat is the classic example. Insulation breakdown that leaks current to earth is another, and it's a safety issue as well as a cost one — worth finding either way.
How much does it cost to find out what's using the power?
Usually a standard callout — see our call-out fee guide. If the cause turns out to be a failed hot water element, the repair usually pays for itself within a billing cycle or two.
