Home Office Power and Data Cabling in Auckland: Wi-Fi Isn't a Plan

The fix for dropping video calls in an Auckland home office is rarely a new router — it's an ethernet cable. Hardwiring the office (and the TV, and a ceiling Wi-Fi access point) typically costs $150–$350 per data point installed, and a proper desk setup adds power at desk height so the workstation stops living on a multibox. The proper home-office spec

  • Ethernet to the desk — wired beats Wi-Fi for every call, upload and screen-share. One cable ends the 'can you hear me?' era.

  • Power at desk height — a four-gang above the desk for monitors, laptop, dock and lamp. The floor-level multibox octopus retires.

  • A ceiling access point where the house actually needs Wi-Fi — one wired AP mid-house outperforms any router hidden in a corner cabinet.

  • A small patch point — fibre terminal, router and switch in one tidy spot (garage or hall cupboard) instead of blinking on the lounge floor.

Old villas, thick walls, bad Wi-Fi

Auckland's character homes are Wi-Fi hostile — native timber, plaster and long hallways eat signal.
